THE VAST SAVANNAH LIES SOYSAMBU, the
Home of Lord Delamere. The name Delamere is synonymous with
the colonial history of Kenya. Hugh Cholmondeley, the third
Baron Delamere, bought this 200 sq km farm in 1903 and introduced
European live stock farming. He left a legacy by adapting
several crops to local conditions and boosting agricultural
development in the Highlands. Despite initial setbacks, today
Delamere Estates are one of the most successful agricultural
enterprises in Kenya and have conserved the rich bio-diversity
in the area around the shores of Lake Elementeita by establishing
a private wildlife sanctuary, where lots of game such as buffalos,
giraffes, eland, gazelles, waterbucks, and other plain game
mingle with the thousands of flamingoes and white pelicans.
