THE MOST
FAMOUS OF KENYA’S RIFT VALLEY LAKES IS UNDOUBTEDLY LAKE
NAKURU, one of the finest
bird watching destinations in the world. The Nakuru National
Park was established in 1961 and covers an area of 188 sq
km. The Kenya Wildlife Service in its efforts to save the
Rhino from extinction relocated black and white Rhinos to
the park. The Rhino population has now increased to about
100 Rhinos. Amongst the millions of flamingoes are also pelicans
and cormorans feeding on the salt tolerant tilapia introduced
to the lake in the sixties to control mosquitoes. In 1977,
a herd of the rare Rothschild giraffe has also been introduced
into the park. Along the grassland bordering the lake, herds
of buffaloes, impalas, and waterbucks are common, while baboons
feed in the shades of the tall yellow fever acacia. Lions
and leopards are a common sight.
